Pandal hopping is the only thing worth doing during Durga Puja holidays in Kolkata. We had just returned after a long night pandal hopping with my family. It was almost 30 minutes past midnight. As we were preparing to sleep, my phone rang. My father’s number flashed on the screen. He lives in New Delhi. He had never called up so late in the night as he is an early sleeper. Thoughts crossed my mind as I picked up the phone. I heard my father’s voice cracking on the other end which was full of anxiety and pain. With my heart in my mouth, I asked what happened. Father replied that he had blood in urine. We got very anxious. I called my sister who is a doctor. She recommended few tests which father did next morning. On dashmi we got a shock. Doctor said my father has bladder cancer. Bladder cancer happens due to smoking, alcohol, meat eating etc. My father is pure vegetarian, a non-smoker and a teetotaller. So it was very shocking for us. The only reason could be the poison on the platter, air pollution or water pollution. Yes, today our food is poisoned. Our air, water and mother earth is poisoned. My father lives in Delhi and Delhi has earned the unenviable distinction of becoming the most polluted city on Earth. As I researched more, I was shocked to find the havoc pesticides, genetically engineered food etc. are causing to our health. It’s not only this; it’s destroying our planet, poisoning rivers, air etc. and affecting the life of other species.Unhealthy food is destroying our children’s health and lives. Today just to fill their coffers, companies are using all tricks to net customers. A chips maker or a soft drink maker dreams that you had potato chips and soft drinks even in your dreams. They bombard children’s mind with so many false advertisements. They are putting sugar in practically all things. Sugar is white poison. Even in the name of healthy food, junk food is what we are eating today. Papa’s health was a great concern for all of us. As we researched best course of treatment for him and visited top doctors in India’s top Cancer hospital’s including Tata Cancer hospital in Mumbai, we found that there is no cure offered by allopathic medicine and only maintenance. We started looking for alternative and we found that things like wheatgrass juice and organic food has great positive effect and in many cases it has eliminated cancer.
